US restores visa-free travel for Hungarians

After nearly two years of restrictions, the United States announced Tuesday, September 16, that Hungary has regained full access to the Visa Waiver Program. From now on, Hungarian citizens can once again travel to the US for up to 90 days of tourism or business without going through the traditional visa process, needing only an approved ESTA travel authorization.

Why were Hungarians previously restricted

The restrictions imposed in 2023 stemmed from US concerns over the process for issuing passports to people born outside Hungary. The verification system was deemed insufficient to prevent identity fraud. As a result, Hungarians not born in Hungary were denied ESTA approval, while the remainder could travel only with a one-year, single-entry authorization.

What changed now

According to the US Department of Homeland Security and Hungarian officials, Hungary improved its identity verification procedures and increased security cooperation with US authorities. With these changes, US officials determined the risks were addressed and restored Hungary’s full access to the program.

How this affects travelers

Starting September 30, 2025, any Hungarian citizen, regardless of birthplace, may apply for an ESTA valid for two years and multiple entries. The rules are now once again in line with other countries in the program, allowing visits of up to 90 days for tourism or business.

Despite the restored access, US authorities emphasize that security monitoring remains ongoing for all countries in the program. If new vulnerabilities are detected, the regulations may be reviewed. For now, no further changes are planned for Hungarian travelers.
